MARTIN DAVALOS - INTERVIEW
Martin Davalos had the speed to compete for the 2009 East Coast SX Lites championship but at the New Orleans race he fell and was run over, resulting in a broken leg. The crash eliminated him from SX and ended up affecting his outdoor season too. We caught up with Martin to see how he is doing and what 2010 looks like.
Hi Martin, how’s it going?
Great, I’m just down here putting in laps and getting ready for SX to start.
Which coast, do you know yet?
Not sure at the moment, it kind of depends on what the team wants. I raced East coast last year. It is a little easier to do East coast because I have a house in Cairo now and my parents can come watch me race too. I’ll be ready for either one though.
Talking of teams we couldn’t help noticing that you’re on a blue bike now. How did that come about?
Well, I was very happy with KTM and I was really looking forward to riding with them again this year but when they folded the team Bobby Reagan of Yamaha offered me a factory ride. I have gotta thank him because things are tough right now and for him to show so much faith in me, well I am very thankful.
One year or two?
The deal is for one year, supercross and outdoor.
Who else is on the team ?
There’s Nico Izzi, Brock Tickle, Max Anstie and me. It’s good I’m really looking forward to it.
Wasn’t there an incident with you and Nico at New Orleans SX this year?
Well yes, I had the holeshot and Nico came across pretty hard in the second turn and we both went down but you know that’s racing and it’s in the past. I am really looking forward to being on the same team and what’s done is done. There are no hard feelings on my part and it’s all about putting Yamaha on top, that’s it.
And then you had the crash after that?
Yeah, a few laps later I broke my fibula and it didn’t seem so bad at first, in fact I rode the LCQ right afterwards. Dr.Berg put me in a boot and told me I would be fine in a few weeks but as it turned out I wasn’t fine because I re-broke it at the first outdoor race in Glenn Helen. So then I had surgery and they put a plate in and at Red Bud I got hit in the exact wrong place and broke it again. So I broke my leg three times last year. I did manage to come back for the last outdoor national but I wasn’t ready and I couldn’t finish the race.
I guess that’s why we saw so little of you last year, huh?
Well yeah, all the time I was trying to come back and do good but I guess I rushed it a little bit and ended up being out longer than I should have been. I will always give 100% in anything I am doing but I guess I should have been more patient. That’s tough for me you know? I learned though.
Can you win the title?
For sure that’s my goal and if I can be more consistent with my results then I’ll have a chance. I have really stepped up my conditioning program and that’s making a big difference.
Stepped up how?
Well we have started doing a lot more monitoring of my heart rate while I’m riding and based on that and a few other things we measure we can figure out what we need to do in the gym to get the most out of my workouts. Clint has me do a lot of cross training too, you know, swimming and stuff like that. I feel I’m in better shape than ever and I have a great team this year which is good.
You’ve been with Colleen for over 5 years now but your relationship with Clint seems like an important one too. Talk about that.
For sure, you know Clint really motivates me and he knows how to get more out of me. I tell you training with him is pressure because he challenges me to do things always a little harder or better than the next person and it’s intense man. I don’t know why but I have to win in the gym too, I guess I am competitive huh? But I like it that way. I think it prepares me for race day and for how I need to compete. Yeah, it’s good. Even if I’m testing in California we speak on the phone and he makes sure I have done my workouts. So yeah, it’s good.
You’re training with Justin Barcia, how is that?
It is really good. We’ve been training at MTF together for a long time so it’s not exactly new for me but he is very aggressive and really throws it out there. I tell you man he is so talented, that kid was born to ride a motorcycle. I think we can for sure push each other in training and that’s good for both of us.
So I guess if you both race East coast that might get interesting huh?
Oh yeah and you can be sure we will both be trying to win. I love to battle and I feel like I have the experience and patience to do well.
So back home in Ecuador, do you have a fan club or anything, are you famous back home?
I don’t know, it’s hard for people to watch me race because there’s no Speed TV. The internet is good though. I have a lot of family and friends who are pulling for me I do know that.
OK Martin thanks for taking time out to catch us up. Good luck with everything and here’s hoping 2010 is good for you.
OK thanks a lot.
Go Back...

Martin, Hope all is well and our whole family wishes you all the luck in 2010. You helped Pete so much @ MTF especially telling him to suck it up and ride thru the pain when he got hurt before Mini o's. Coming from you that meant alot. Thanks again, "Pistol Pete " and his family> Happy New Year !!!
